The little things

Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference.
The teachers fell in love with these chairs during training.

Netbook

This teacher forgot her password to login to her school computer so
she grabbed her own. Is this a practical size for you?

Wii in the classroom

I had a training over Wii in the classroom last Friday. It was crazy fun. If you haven't watched any YouTube videos of it here's the breakdown: A guy name Johnny Chung Lee from Carnegie Mellon uses a Wii remote (Wiimote) to detect an LED light on any smooth surface. He created a piece of calibration software to go with it and has it available for free download (Mac and PC).

The most difficult part is making the pen. You can buy an LED light or use some ingenuity to create your own. I used an old remote from our tech department. The only downside was that I sliced my thumb prying the thing open. Otherwise, it really does level the playing field for the schools that don't have the funds to put multi-thousand dollar interactive whiteboards in every classroom.

All it takes is $40 for a Wiimote, $5-10 for LED light, wiring, on/off switch, 2 AA batteries, and a little determination to make this work.

Thanks for reading,

Adrian

I'll be training over "blogging, texting, and twittering" tomorrow. This next school year my blog will be focusing on 21st century skills and how to get teachers to integrate them into the classroom. Tomorrow's training will be a great first step for some teachers. I've found that a certain generation of teachers are NOT comfortable will new and continuing technology. Hopefully I'll be able to help them gain some confidence and truly excel at implementing new technologies into their lessons and classrooms.
